Take a peek at any 21st century bride’s wedding wish list or Pinterest board and you’re bound to see one name in common: Monique Lhuillier. Since the mid-’90s, the LA-based designer has been synonymous with romantic, ethereal gowns that play on traditional feminine elements and make them feel thoroughly now.

In a bold departure from the crisp white dresses typically associated with wedding wear, many of Monique’s most popular creations are filled with personality, from colorful floral embroidery and prints to daring yet delicate lace. And just as those gowns have inspired so many brides to think outside of the ordinary on their big day, they’ve now inspired Monique Lhuillier’s first-ever collection of online wedding invitations, designed exclusively for Paperless Post.

Featuring the same whimsical motifs she’s known for, each invitation is a true expression of modern love: effortless, elegant, and memorable from the very first moment. We spoke with Monique to learn more about her exciting new collection of Paperless Post wedding invitations, her dream dinner party, and why she’ll never tire of traveling.

Three cards—a wedding invitation with a floral border, a save the date with a lemon and ribbon ring design, and a save the date with a white lace pattern—are displayed with floral propping on a light blue background.“Blue Butterflies,” “Limoncello (Save the Date),” and “Garden Veil” by Monique Lhuillier for Paperless Post.

What excites you most about your first Paperless Post collection?

Sharing these stunning wedding invitations. The Paperless Post design team understood my vision and captured the elegance and femininity of Monique Lhuillier bridal. It is the artistry of the collection that perfectly reflects the delicate essence of my bridal gowns.  For those who are looking for a beautiful and memorable yet effortless way to approach wedding invitations, Paperless Post is the premier destination. I couldn’t be more thrilled to enter the digital invitation space with these breathtaking designs.

In terms of both pattern and fabric, what influences went into creating these invitations?

Mainly, the inspiration for my Paperless Post collection came from some of our most coveted gowns. My creations embody romance and femininity and set the standard for impeccable design, and my love of gardens and florals is on full display in print, color, and silhouette. If you look closely, you’ll see all the details I love, whether it’s delicate lace, intricate embroideries, or whimsical prints. I decided to focus on prints for our debut collection with Paperless Post, as they have become extremely popular with my brides who want a less traditional approach for their special day. And lace was not overlooked; it’s the foundation of the collection with an added touch of color to tie in beautifully into the assortment.

How do you stay inspired?

From a very young age, I’ve been inspired by travel. It’s the lens through which I am constantly learning and finding inspiration. New cultures, beautiful landscapes, gardens, and architecture that I experienced around the world inform all that I create. I am also a voracious learner; it’s important for me to stay informed, to challenge myself, and to never stop being inspired as a person, or as a designer.

How do you hope guests will feel when they receive a Monique Lhuiller for Paperless Post invitation?

As the first expression of the wedding day, I hope guests will sense the beauty of what’s to follow. The invitation sets the tone for the most special day in the bride and groom-to-be’s life, and I couldn’t be happier to continue to touch the lives of so many.

Let’s talk about getting dressed. To you, what makes for a perfect party look or wedding dress?

I always tell brides to follow their instinct. Women look their best when they feel comfortable and beautiful, so it’s all about selecting a gown that makes a bride confident. And less is more, so choose understated accessories: delicate earrings and a beautiful engagement ring, and of course, the perfect, comfortable shoe.

Describe your dream event. What is the backdrop?

The backdrop is the outdoors, in a private garden or at the beach. It’s a magical place to host an event. Living in LA, I love entertaining outside. It creates a feeling of ease and relaxation for your guests while they enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings.

Who’s got a seat at the table?

An intimate group of my closest family and friends.

How do you create the perfect mood?

The first step is lighting and music. For table décor, I love fresh flowers in loose bouquets placed down the center, with candles scattered throughout. I layer the table with colorful linens, beautiful dinnerware, and glassware to create a chic yet relaxed entertaining statement, all resulting in an inviting atmosphere that encourages great conversation, laughter, celebration, and fun!

What drink do you have in your hand?

Tequila over ice with a fresh cut lime.

If you were to give three pieces of advice to a host who wants to throw an event that evokes the same flair as your invitations, what would they be?

  1. Be authentic.
  2. Create a feeling of easy elegance by making your guests feel welcome.
  3. Flower, flowers, flowers…

Any parting words?

I strive to capture life’s special moments in everything that I create, and hope my designs encourage others to live each moment to the fullest.
