Love is in the air this February—love for your BFFs, that is. Typically celebrated on February 13th, Galentine’s Day is a holiday all about honoring female friendships. And what better way to let your best girlfriends know how much they mean to you than by celebrating them with the perfect Galentine’s Day gathering

When it comes to hosting events that emphasize meaningful connections—like a Galentine’s Day party—event producer and photographer Kate Pauley is the perfect source to consult for tips and ideas. Pauley is the founder of Create Dinners, a full-service event production company that ideates, plans, and executes one-of-a-kind events for brands, companies, and individuals. Founded in 2016, Create Dinners also specializes in hosting communal workshops and creative dinner parties in New York City aimed at creating space for people to intentionally gather, foster a sense of community, and forge in-person connections.

We spoke with Kate Pauley about how she would host a thoughtful Galentine’s Day party that properly toasts all her favorite gals in style, from recommendations for drinks and décor to unique activities, special gift ideas, and of course, the ideal “girl dinner.”

What are three things you need to host a successful Galentine’s Day party?

Gals, red and pink, and bubbles.

If you were hosting your ideal Galentine’s Day party at home, how would you decorate to make it feel festive?

I wouldn’t go over the top outside of the tablescape, but I’d sprinkle some florals around and burn a really beautiful smelling candle. I’d also put on a record—something like Billie Holiday or Etta James.

What would your tablescape look like?

It would be filled with creams, light blushes, and deep oxblood reds. I’d bring those tones in through florals, candles, printed menus, napkins, and tablecloths.

Would there be a theme?

There are so many routes you could go with your party’s theme: lace, tulle, pajamas, “red tie” attire—I don’t know, I’m riffing here on personal desires.

What would be on the menu?

I love Mediterranean and Italian food. They feel romantic and lend themselves to so many different family-style dishes. Of course, you can always do a lush “girl dinner” grazing table: cheeses, olives, fruits, sweets, the works.

Speaking of sweets, what would you serve for dessert?

Something with chocolate and/or strawberry! I’m a fan of mousses, crème brûleés, and really good cake. Whatever you serve, make it decadent.

A French 75.

Would you organize any activities?

I’d love to take a portrait of all my Galentines, so I’d find a cozy corner where that could happen. It would also be lovely to have everyone read a love poem—one they love by someone else or if they’re feeling bold, one they wrote. Another fun activity could be cookie decorating. I actually did this a few years ago with some girls for Galentine’s Day and it was so cute! My friend Hannah made heart cookies, brought all the icing and materials needed, and we pretended to be bakers. Creating DIY floral arrangements is another activity perfect for a Galentine’s Day event—and your guests get to take home their flowers at the end of the night!

Do you exchange gifts for Galentine’s Day?

There would be a book (romance novels, perhaps?) or wine exchange! It’s always fun to take something home, and a $20 gift limit makes it approachable and fun.

How many people would you invite?

Inviting eight to ten guests feels perfectly intimate.

Would you recommend hosting Galentine’s Day at a restaurant?

Yes, if it’s a restaurant that has a private area! Otherwise, I’m all for an at-home gathering for Galentine’s Day.

Any tips for making a restaurant celebration feel festive?

Bring in florals and candles! Ask the restaurant if you can put on your own playlist. Print your own menus and name cards. Send everyone home with a small gift. For Galentine’s Day, it could be a tiny cake, a love poem, a little charm, a fun lipstick, or a vintage postcard. Those little touches go such a long way.

Can you host a Galentine’s Day party any day in February?

I think so, especially in New York City where those months are so cold. We need something to look forward to, and mid-February is the perfect amount of time post-holidays to be craving another gathering!

This February 13th, 14th, or any day, let Pauley’s mission of emphasizing intentionality and embracing connection inspire you to throw a Galentine’s Day gathering your girlfriends will adore, whether it’s a cozy soirée, cocktail bash, or bubble-filled brunch. In addition to a thoughtfully planned party, express your love with adorable Valentine’s Day cards you can send instantly.  For Galentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or any occasion, celebrate all the moments that matter with the people that matter, with the help of Paperless Post.
